New York Yankees first baseman Luke Voit recently expressed his feelings that the Yankees must re-sign DJ LeMahieu.
Yankees first baseman Luke Voit clearly has the same feelings on DJ LeMahieu as the rest of the fanbase does, just re-sign him already. We are now in the middle of January and everyone is becoming frustrated as to why the AL batting champion is still a free agent.
“I think he’s the best hitter in baseball,” Voit told Bruce Beck of News 4 New York on Tuesday. “I’m literally sitting next to a printer right now and it makes me think of DJ because he’s a freaking machine. We need him.”
In his past two seasons with the Yankees, DJ has been everything the Yankees could have asked for and more. The 32-year-old slashed .336/.386/.536 with 36 home runs and 129 RBI in 195 games since coming to the Bronx. He also finished in fourth place in MVP voting in 2019 and third in 2020.
Since contract negotiations have dragged on all offseason, LeMahieu has apparently begun to re-engage offers from other teams as the Yankees don’t seem to be giving him what he is looking for, a J.D. Martinez-type deal. However, the belief is that he will still end up back in the Bronx when things are all said and done.
“Hopefully we get him,” Voit said, “because he wants to play the rest of his career in New York.”
