This, undoubtedly, is the biggest name of this year’s infielder free-agent class besides LeMahieu and will be one of the top names to hit the market overall. Semien has had a down year so far for Oakland, but in 2019, finished third in AL MVP Voting, where he spotted a .285 average with a .369 OBP. He also had a 137 wRC+ and a .373 wOBA to his name, not to mention smacking 33 balls over the fence.
The positives don’t stop there with Semien, however. He’s also a plus-defender, as his 2018 and 2019 numbers would indicate. Between ’18 and ’19, Semien has a total of 26 DRS and 8.3 UZR in ’18 and a 6.7 mark in ’19. Obviously, he’s not on Simmons’ level defensively, but it’s safe to say he can still handle the ball well, while also supplying top-tier offense. Just like if the Yankees were to sign Simmons, I’d picture Torres manning second.
Obviously, the best-case scenario is that the Yankees ink DJ LeMahieu to keep him in the Bronx. If that plan fails, however, these three options are where the Bombers can turn to next.
