Yankees summer camp has been underway since early July, and many players are making the push to make the team, but which players have stood out the most?
One of the biggest disappointments about the delayed 2020 season is the abrupt ending to spring training. The games might not mean much, but they give the chance for fringe guys, and newly acquired talent to showcase their skills and make their case for making the Yankees Opening Day roster. Here are three players that have impressed during Summer Camp.
The most exciting young pitcher that has yet to make his Major League Debut for the Yankees is Clarke Schmidt. The former first-round pick in 2017 really turned heads with his performance back in spring training and now is doing the same in summer camp. What’s interesting about Schmidt is that even though he underwent Tommy John before the draft, the Yankees still spent the 16th overall pick on him. They showed confidence in him and it is starting to show that it was worth it.
Schmidt doesn’t have an overpowering arm, but his stuff is lights out. What he has been able to do against his own teammates, the starters I might add, has been nothing short of impressive. Although pitchers are expected to be ahead of hitters during camp, there is no denying that Schmidt is the real deal. It is unclear what role he will have this season, but it is safe to say that he has made a strong case for himself to pitch in the bigs going forward.
