Tampa Bay Rays
Matchups: Aug. 2-6 in Tampa Bay, Aug. 18-20 in New York, Aug. 31- Sept. 2 in New York
The Rays will be the Yankees’ biggest threat in the AL East. Tampa Bay is coming off back to back seasons with at least 90 wins and in 2019 won the AL Wild Card game over the Oakland A’s and took the Houston Astros to Game 5 of the ALDS.
What will make Tampa tough to beat in a shortened season is their loaded pitching staff. Their rotation includes all-star Charlie Morton, former Cy-Young award winner Blake Snell and a star in the making in Tyler Glasnow. In the pen, Tampa has a group of flame-throwers in Jose Alvarado, Diego Castillo and Nick Anderson that will make late-inning comebacks difficult.
With pitching normally ahead of hitting to start the seasons, the Yankees should benefit from the fact their matchups with Tampa being a few weeks into the season; however, the series will likely be close to even.
Projected Record: 6-4
