Gio Urshela exploded onto the season in 2019. Before 2019, Gio had never cracked more than .233 at the plate. Something clicked in 2019 and Gio was a changed player. In 2019, he slashed .314/.355/.534 with 139 hits, 34 doubles, 21 home runs, and 74 RBIs. Gio filled in beautifully for an injured Andujar, and for a while was carrying a hobbled Yankees team.
His added bat plus his great defense at third was a welcomed sight. Many fans began to write off Andujar, but we can’t just yet. 2020 is a huge year for Gio as he needs to show the Yankees that 2019 wasn’t just a fluke year. He also needs to win that third base job from Miggy, who no doubt has the better bat. Gio needs to prove that 2019 was not a fluke year, and it will determine how the Yankees will deal with Andujar.
