New York Yankees: 3 External Pitching Options

While Brian Cashman claims the New York Yankees will stay in the organization for pitching depth, these three names may force him to change his mind.

The New York Yankees were dealt a huge blow Tuesday when it was announced Luis Severino would need season ending Tommy John Surgery.

With Severino out, and James Paxton already banged up the Yankees need to find a fifth starter. Yankees general manager says that that starter will likely come within the organization but that could change if more injuries occur or the team feels the right fit is on the open market.

Here are three external options that could make sense for the Yankees fifth starter role.

Andrew Cashner

While Andrew Cashner has had his ups and downs throughout his career, but he has become a reliable innings eater. Each of the last three seasons, he has thrown at least 150 innings.

Cashner is only two seasons removed from a 2017 campaign with the Texas Rangers that saw him post a 3.40 ERA in 28 starts. Last season, Cashner pitched to a 3.83 ERA in 17 starts with the Baltimore Orioles before being traded to the Boston Red Sox.

For a Yankees team built around their bullpen, Cashner can help keep relief arms fresh while keeping the team in games for five to six innings.
