5. Luis Severino | SP | Age: 25
The Yankees brought in a new undisputed ace to lead the pitching staff in 2020. That role solely belongs to Cole and his $324 million arm. However, before the Yankees made the blockbuster deal to bolster their rotation, they had a young gun waiting in the wings. Severino has the tools to be an ace in the majors and has a chance to prove it in his sixth year as a pro.
Severino spent most of 2019 rehabbing from various injuries. He came back for the final month of the regular season and the playoff run, but the 25-year-old still has a lot to prove. Consistency will be the key for Severino. It is an aspect of his game that has eluded him since he became a regular starter in the rotation.
Severino has yet to put an entire season together. He’s had strong halves followed by a dip in production or vice versa. Now, it is time for Severino to prove he can be the No. 2 on the staff behind the newly-added Cole.
