2. Luke Voit | 1B | Age: 28
When the Yankees acquired Voit from the St. Louis Cardinals during the 2018 season, it appeared the future at first base might be locked up. He enjoyed an incredible run during the second half of the season, and fans were excited to see No. 45 manning first base. But Voit struggled with injuries and had a rough second half. It forced the Yankees to add some extra beef to the position in the form of Edwin Encarnacion. It also allowed for the small emergence of Mike Ford.
Voit’s talents at the plate are incredible. His combination of power and ability to get on base will give him a chance to find a spot in the middle of the order. However, his second half of 2019 was hard to watch. In his final 40 games, Voit had 161 plate appearances and while his OBP was at a respectable .348, his OPS sat at a measly .715. Some might point to injury as a reason for the decline. That argument certainly holds some weight.
But now with Greg Bird completely out of the picture and Ford looking to break into a regular role in the big leagues, Voit’s time to shine has arrived more now than it ever has.
