In this Unhinged Yankees prospect profile, we take a close look at New York Yankees pitching prospect with a lot of potential, Luis Medina.
According to MLB Pipeline, Luis Medina came into the 2019 season as the Yankees 14th ranked top prospect but as the season went on, Medina’s ranking dropped to 20.
Luis Medina was signed to a minor league contract back on July 8th, 2015 with the Yankees. Medina who is now 20 years old is not expected to make the major league roster till 2022.
Let’s take a look at Luis Medina’s scouting report:
Luis Medina
Age: 20
Throwing: R
Status: Added to Yankees 40-man roster.
Height/Weight: 6’1, 175 lbs.
MLB Pipeline Scouting Report: Scouting grades: Fastball: 70 | Curveball: 60 | Changeup: 55 | Control: 40 | Overall: 45
This past season Medina pitched for two teams. The Tampa Tarpons and Charleston Riverdogs. The 20 year old in 22 games went 1-8 with a 5.47 ERA, and had 127 strikeouts.
According to MLB Pipeline, they believe Medina has a high top ceiling with a strong arm and that the Yankees will give him time to figure everything out with all his potential. “Medina has electric arm speed that generates 95-100 mph fastballs with little effort, peaking at 102 with some cutting action. His high-spin curveball gives him a second plus-plus pitch at its best, combining power in the low 80s with sharp break. His low-90s changeup has splitter action and gives him a third weapon that can make hitters look silly.”
Now entering the 2020 season, it will be fun to see Medina make a start in Spring Training. The Yankees have a great rotation with years to come and with his electric stuff, it will be fun to see Medina in a rotation with Cole and Severino.
