In this prospect profile, we take a closer look at New York Yankees pitching prospect with a possible future in the Yankees rotation, Luis Gil.
According to MLB Pipeline, Gil came into the 2019 season ranked as the Yankees 13th best prospect but has moved up and Gil has now ranked the Yankees fourth-best prospect. Gil is the Yankees second-best pitching prospect behind Deivi Garcia.
The 21-year-old was signed by the Minnesota Twins during the 2014-15 international signing period. Luis Gil did not become a Yankee until 2018 when Minnesota traded him to New York for Jake Cave.

This season, Gil has pitched for the Tampa Tarpons and the Charleston RiverDogs. In Tampa, Gil went 1-0 in 3 starts and posted a 4.85 ERA with 11 K’s. With the RiverDogs, the 21-year-old is 4-5 in 17 starts with a 2.39 ERA and 112 K’s.
According to MLB Pipeline, Gil has the arm of a big guy and can hit the high numbers with his fastball. The only thing they believed is an issue is, “He has trouble keeping his delivery in sync and repeating his release point, which makes it difficult for him to harness his overpowering stuff. New York will keep feeding him innings as a starter because he needs experience, but he may wind up as a dynamic late-inning reliever.”
Gil is projected to hit the big leagues by 2022 and since he has a lot of work to put in, hopefully by then we will see if he’s officially ready. Gil has a bright future with the Yankees and whether he’s in the rotation or the bullpen, between him and Garcia, the Yankees young pitchers definitely give the fans a lot of optimism.
