Let’s take a close at New York Yankees second-round draft pick from 2018 who can possibly be the future catcher of the team, Josh Breaux.
According to MLB Pipeline, Breaux came into the 2019 season as the Yankees 15th ranked top prospect, and the number two ranked catcher behind number 6th ranked prospect Anthony Siegler.
The 21-year-old catcher was drafted in 2017 by the Houston Astros in the 36th round but returned to school and a year later the Texas native was drafted by the Yankees with the 61st pick in the second round.
Let’s take a look at Josh Breaux scouting report:
Josh Breaux
Team: Charleston Riverdogs
Age: 21
Batting/Throwing: R/R
Status: 7 Day IL
Height/Weight: 6’1, 220 lbs.
MLB Pipeline Scouting Report: Scouting grades: Hit: 40 | Power: 55 | Run: 20 | Arm: 60 | Field: 45 | Overall: 45
This season, the 21-year-old is batting .295 with a .323 OBP, 7 HR’s, 30 RBI’s and a .823 OPS. He was also a Mid Season All-Star but the Riverdogs catcher has been on the IL since May.
According to MLB’s Pipeline Scouting Report, they believe he needs to work on his defense mechanics. This is what they had to say, “Despite his pure arm strength, he threw out just nine percent of base stealers in his first taste of pro ball and won’t be able to control the running game until he improves his throwing accuracy.”
With Breaux being projected to be in the big leagues by 2021, it will be interesting to see how the young catcher develops within the next couple of years. The Yankees farm has had success in the last couple of years and it’s always fun looking forward to the future.
