Luis Severino to Start Wild Card Game for Yankees

Aaron Boone announced Tuesday that RHP Luis Severino will get the ball Wednesday night against the A’s to start the Wild Card game.

The long-awaited decision was finally announced in a press conference this afternoon that Severino will be getting a 2nd chance to pitch the Yankees into the Division Series after last year’s brutal Wild Card performance.

The 24-year-old posted his best record to date with a 19-8 mark with a 3.39 ERA in 191 1/3 innings. Despite the stellar 1.98 ERA he pitched to in his first 18 starts, Severino struggled mightily in the 2nd half with a 5.57 mark which is why Wednesday night’s starter was even a question.

It’s no secret however that Boone will keep Severino on a short leash as his bullpen will be ready to go at any point. Masahiro Tanaka and J.A Happ will also both be on the Wild Card game roster along with Lance Lynn, who all could very well see some action if the game extends into extra innings.

If you’re looking for a vote of confidence, Severino owns a 2.04 ERA over his last three starts with a 9.17 K/9. If Severino can hold down the fort for four to five innings, then the Yankees should be in good shape turning it over to their bullpen.
